Who are we

VM Innovations (VMI) was set up in 2013 by husband and wife team Vic and Judy Maharaj. When an engineer and an artist joins forces, expect delivery with precision and incredible imagination.

VM Innovations is a B-BBEE Level 1 Company.

With over 42 combined years in the motorsport, design, event management and small business sectors, VM Innovations together with a high performance team provides various innovative services.

  • Vic Maharaj

    Managing Director

    Vic Maharaj  graduated in 1991 from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with a university degree in BSc Engineering: Mechanical. After qualifying he worked for De Beers Industrial Diamond Division from 1992 to 1994 before starting a long and successful career in motorsport with BMW(SA) from 1994 to 2002.

    Vic has worked in various roles within the motorsport industry for 22 years. His main role and passion lies in race car engineering and team management. He has won several South African Championships along the way in saloon car and touring car racing.   In 2002 Vic took up a opportunity to engineer cars in the German F3 and FIA F3000 Championships. After returning from Germany he managed and engineered various teams through his own motorsport business ventures.  He managed the National Production Car Championship Category in 2015 and its transition into the Sasol Global Touring Car Championship. Vic has mentored many leading South African drivers, who rely on his engineering skills and expertise to enhance their driving skills.

    Currently,  Vic is team manager for the Sasol GTC Racing Team and a Supersport television presenter since 2003 for their Formula One World Championship coverage.  He is technical director of Global Touring Cars and managing director/chief engineer of his own company called VM Innovations focusing on race car preparation and maintenance in the premier circuit racing categories in South Africa.

  • Judy Maharaj

    Executive Director

    Judy has over 21 years experience working for diverse institutions in executive, project and creative design management. She is a dedicated champion of project plans with discerning attention to detail whilst maintaining an overall, peripheral vision, i.e. a proven and successful approach in the execution of strategy and managing operations aligned with social impact and wealth creation for all stakeholders. Having worked across multiple sectors ranging from government, corporate, civil society and private foundations to national institutions, Judy provides a combination of creativity, business management, programme development as well as an astute understanding and implementation thereof.

    Judy holds a National Diploma in Textile Design from the Durban University of Technology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Practice from the Henley Business School. She is presently in the process of completing her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Henley.

  • Seagan Govender

    Seagan joined VMI as an intern in 2013. Over the years,  his commitment and dedication to his work has  provided a great platform for him to develop to his current position as a technician. He has worked with many leading South African circuit racing drivers in the Production cars series and now the SASOL GTC championship.

    Even as a schoolboy, Seagan was fascinated by the mechanical workings of cars and with his natural abilities and passionate dedication, his abilities grow each year. He is continuously improving his skills to develop his career in motorsport. His long term goals are to formalise his practical experience by studying towards his motor mechanics certification.

  • Marcus Junputh

    Marcus has over 18 years of experience in logistics and operations support. The fast paced arena of motorsport ensures his days are spent learning and executing a variety of tasks. His key role is to ensure that the team is always equipped, stocked and ready to race.

  • Saashin Moodley

    In March 2018, Saashin was appointed as Senior Technician and workshop manager. He has over 11 years experience working in the  South African Motorsport sector. After completing his matric at Howick High School in Kwa-Zulu Natal, he served an apprenticeship with VMP Motorsport for 2 years before joining the team permanently. During his 7 year tenure he was involved with many great South African drivers and was part of the National Production Car series and Formula VW.

    Prior to joining VMI, Saashin worked for International Racing Supplies as workshop manager for 5 years. The company specializes in import and supplies of motorsport products.

    Saashin’s long term goals are to significantly contribute in growing and advancing the sector, by using the various skills and experience he has acquired over the years. He is passionate about his own development as well as the growth of future technicians in motorsport.

  • Reuben Makgobyana

    Reuben has been part of the VMI family on a casual basis since 2016. In March 2018 he was appointed permanently as assistant Technician.

    Reuben spent 6 years working at the West Driefontein mine. He was part of the team that extracted the gold and ensured that the cleaning and melting process was carried out successfully so that the gold could be distributed to various jewelry companies. His years spent at the mine taught him to appreciate his technical talents. Reuben is able make head-lights, jewelry and is an excellent carpenter.

    His long term goals is to formalize his talents and gain a qualification in the technical field.

  • Thapelo Matthews

    Thapelo hails from Kuruman in The Northern Cape. He joined VMI as a part time cleaner in 2017. Due to his enthusiasm and solid work ethic, he was promoted 6 months later to race car assistant.

    At the age of 17 he joined Transnet as a general worker for 3 years. Amongst the many valuable skills gained he learned how to operate a tamping machine to transport stock such as parts and oil tanks.

    Thapelo is excited about his career advancement in motorsport and his latest travel adventures with the VM Innovations team to other provinces has added to his motivation to “see the world”. Thapelo is currently completing his grade 12 part time. His long term goal is to complete a technical engineering diploma.

    He is passionate about giving back to his community.
